Power and Performance
The contractor-grade DCS385L cordless reciprocating saw features a high-performance, variable-speed motor that drives the blade at 0-3,000 strokes per minute, with an aggressive-cutting stroke length of 1-1/8-inch. Use it with confidence for a wide range of building, remodeling and demolition work, such as, cutting rough openings through walls and roofs, slicing plastic pipe and metal ductwork, chopping up old kitchen cabinets and countertops, and slashing through hardwood flooring. The dewalt DCS385L is very powerful. Great for any task you can throw at it, and the lithium ion battery lasts long and is more powerful than the standard nickel metal hydride or nickel cadium crap that you usually see. Lithium ion is not only more powerful, but it's smaller and lighter weight.
I get alot of usage out of it, and I only carry this case when I need it. I don't have to lug hundreds of tools around.
Batteries are excellent for being outside of a customers jobsite when you can't get access to power, and you only need the use the saw for an hour or so... Obviously, if you need to use a saw all day, it's better to get a plug in, but I can't always get power wherever I need, especially if I'm cutting out tree roots somewhere..
Overall, I have no complaints whatsoever. The saw is so powerful, it will rattle your arm/shoulder and all the way up to your head making your vision start to rattle, no joke. You can't focus your vision on how powerful this is, as your eyes start to shake... Don't forget, this is a cordless unit...

This is the first reciprocating saw that I've own, so I have nothing to compare it to. I've wanted one ever since a friend of mine helped me finish the basement and used one to saw through wood, nails, and anything else that got in the way. I bought this because I was cleaning out my father-in-laws basement, garage and storage sheds, and wanted something that didn't require a cord to be run to the "back 40".
When this beast arrived, I thought about sending it back because it looked big, kind of like one of the guns you might use to shoot monsters in the video game Doom. But, one of the cardinal rules of the tools of destruction is that the tool can't be too powerful. I'm glad I kept this.
First, you'll need to order saw blades, as none come with the saw. I recommend DEWALT DW4890 15-Piece Reciprocating Saw Blade Tough Case Set because it has a variety of blades, and it fits nicely in the saw case. That's the first nice thing about this package, is that the case has lots of extra room in it for carrying things.
Next, you'll want to consider a spare battery, such as DEWALT DC9180 18 -Volt Lithium-Ion Battery Pack. It is really expensive, but I ran out of juice in the middle of a project and am glad I had a spare. It, too, fits in the spacious case that comes with this saw. This nice thing about a spare is you can be using one battery while charging the spare.
Changing the saw blades is really easy. There is a quick change lever on the side of the unit that you lift, which allows you to insert a blade. Once the blade is in, you lower the lever back in place and you are ready to go. You can insert the blade up, down, left or right. That is a nice feature because you don't have to twist the saw around if you need to saw in a different direction.
I used this saw to rip apart some old benches that used a heavy 2x4 wood. The saw went through the wood, nails and all. It also made easy work of some 2x6 treated lumber. When some other boards were too long to fit in the dumpster, I climbed in with the saw and made short work of it. The combination of power and portability make this saw a winner in my book.
